Governors' Ethanol Coalition

                                                                                   July 31, 2001

The Honorable Billy Tauzin
Chairman
House Energy and Commerce Committee
2183 Rayburn House Office Building
Independence Ave. and South Capitol St., SW
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

Your Committee’s recent action to report a comprehensive energy policy bill marks an important first step in moving our Nation towards meeting its energy security goals. Among the key elements of the bill as reported, is a provision to amend the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 to extend the current CAFÉ credits for the production of dual fuel vehicles. The Governors Ethanol Coalition strongly supports this provision.

This has been a very good program and clearly has helped encourage the production of vehicles capable of using alternative fuels.

Accordingly, on behalf of the Governors' Ethanol Coalition I urge that you work to ensure that the credits provision is included as part of any comprehensive legislative package that might be brought to the House floor and that such provision is retained in any final House-passed bill.

This issue is of critical importance to the farm economies of the states that are members of the Governors' Ethanol Coalition. With Warm Regards, I am.

Sincerely,

Mike Johanns
Governor of Nebraska and Chair
