EPA Lowering of Sulfur Levels a Possible Opportunity for Ethanol

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is moving forward with regulations to lower fuel sulfur levels from the current national average of 340 parts per million. A notice of proposed rulemaking, supported by the auto industry, environmental organizations and state regulators, is anticipated in the next few months. Ethanol and oxygenates may see a new market opportunity as replacements for lost octane and volume in low sulfur fuels.
