Government Vehicles in Mexico City To Use 10% Ethanol Blends
In September, the Mexican federal government began using 10 percent ethanol blended fuel in the 20,000 vehicles in the federal fleet in Mexico City. According to the Secretary of the Department of Economic Development for the Federal District that encompasses most of Mexico City, Francisco Cano Escalante, the government hopes to eventually have nearly four million vehicles all public and private vehicles using 10 percent fuel blends. The new effort, called "Clean Fuels, Clean Earth," hopes to achieve a 30 percent reduction in vehicle emissions and provide assistance to the nation's sugar cane industry. Initially, ethanol produced by local sugar cane growers will be used in the program. However, local ethanol suppliers may not be able to satisfy the demand. It is likely that future supplies of ethanol from U.S. plants would be used in the blended fuels.
