The U.S. Postal Service has announced its intention to purchase 10,000 flexible fuel Ford Ranger pickup trucks for its vehicle fleet. The vehicles are designed to operate on any blend of ethanol and unleaded gasoline up to 85% ethanol, also called E85. The Rangers are needed to replace aging vehicles and will count toward alternative fuel vehicle purchase requirements outlined in the Energy Policy Act of 1992.

The Postal Service is currently working with the ethanol industry, the U.S. Department of Energy and state and local government agencies to place as many vehicles as possible near existing E85 fueling facilities. In addition, the Postal Service will work with other government agencies to concentrate numbers of vehicles in other areas sufficient to attract commercial fueling pumps.
