Chicago Attributes Pollution Reduction to Ethanol-blended Reformulated Gasoline

A newly released report by the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago identifies ethanol-blended reformulated gasoline as the most effective pollution reduction strategy for the area. According to the report, Clearing the Air: 1990-1998, Air Pollution Strategies That Have Worked, ethanol-blended reformulated gasoline has accounted for more than 25 percent (112.8 tons per day) of the reduction of emissions of smog-forming volatile organic compounds since 1990. "More than any other air pollution control strategy, reformulated gasoline has helped to reduce air pollution, including ground-level ozone, in the Chicago region," the report states. Reformulated gasoline is estimated to have reduced volatile organic compound emissions from cars, trucks and lawn and garden equipment by nearly 20 percent in 1995.
