A Flood of E85 Fueling Stations
to Open Across U.S.

132 Pumps to Be Open by 1999

With the recent announcements by Ford Motor Company and Chrysler to mass produce flexible- fuel vehicles, major plans are underway to develop fueling stations that offer E85 (85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline).

Even though past media reports indicated only 40 E85 pumps exist, all in the Midwest, the number is actually substantially higher. Already, 64 E85 fuel pumps are available across the country. Another 72 are planned for opening by 1999.

As recently as 1993, only six E85 pumps at government facilities existed in the U.S., one accessible to the motoring public. In four short years, that number has increased to today's 60: 33 of which are open to the public. That is an increase of 1000 percent.

The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition has been a major catalyst in E85's success. The Vehicle Coalition is a joint effort of the Governors' Ethanol Coalition and the National Corn Grower's Association.

This map indicates where E85 fueling pumps currently exist and locations for new fueling stations.

More E85 Vehicles to Hit the Market in 1998

Ford and Chrysler plan to introduce hundreds of thousands of Ford Ranger pickups, Ford Windstar minivans, and Chrysler minivans that run on flexible fuels by 1998. According to the carmakers, sales of flexible fuel vehicles (in the past, Ford Tauruses and Chevy Luminas) have totaled 12,000 to date.

Flexible-fuel vehicles can run on any type of commercially available fuel, whether E85, 10 percent ethanol, or regular gasoline. Ethanol is most commonly sold in a 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline mixture.
