The National Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals
Act, introduced by Indiana Senator Lugar, was approved recently by the
Senate Agriculture Committee. The bill, S.935, would provide $49 million
annually over a six-year period for research to develop low-cost biofuels and
bio-based chemicals to replace fossil-fuel based fuels and products. In
addition, the Committee approved S. 1177, legislation offered by Senator Harkin
to allow the harvesting of biomass on Conservation Reserve Program land,
providing the conditions protect soil and wildlife.
