The
announcement follows an earlier purchase of 10,000 flexible fuel vehicles that
are scheduled for delivery this fall. The E85 flexible fuel vehicles operate on
85 percent ethanol, unleaded gasoline or any combination of the two fuels. The
U.S. Postal Service fleet, which today includes 8,272 alternative fuel vehicles,
is expected to grow to more than 30,000 by 2001.
Earlier this summer, the Senate approved an amendment
offered by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin urging the Postal Service to place the
flexible fuel vehicles in parts of the country where ethanol is available.
According to Durbin, "These vehicles should be placed where they can run on
ethanol, not on red tape and missed opportunities."
