| "During the past year, several
Senate votes -- another of which could occur during Senate consideration
of the highway reauthorization bill -- and statements by members of Congress
have underscored the support that exists in the Congress, and the Clinton
Administration, for continuation and expansion of the production and use
of renewable ethanol and ethers. President Clinton's statement following
enactment of the budget package this summer made clear his strong personal
support for both ethanol and ETBE, as well as his commitment to seeing
the existing tax incentives extended. "I can personally attest to the intensity of the President's support for the renewable fuels industry, as a result of several discussions we have had recently about the subject. |
"On the basis of
the strong bipartisan support in the Congress, I am confident that the
tax incentives for renewable alcohols and ethers will be extended, most
likely in the highway bill when it is completed by conference committee
action sometime early next year. I would encourage those of you who have
influence with House ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer to urge
an end to his opposition to the tax credits."
