Coalition Governors Meet with EPA Administrator

EPA Administrator
Carol Browner

Iowa Governor and Chairman Tom Vilsack and Nebraska Governor and Vice Chairman Mike Johanns met the EPA Administrator Carol Browner recently to discuss several pending federal decisions impacting ethanol. With regard to the California waiver request, Browner affirmed that a decision would be delayed until EPA scientists have an opportunity to review the data. Browner also indicated outside scientific reviews are possible as well as a formal rulemaking by the agency, both of which would further delay a decision.

Browner also expressed the agency's interest in examining expanded use of ethanol as a clean air additive in light of concerns regarding MTBE and proposals to phase out or ban the additive. "Administrator Browner made it clear the agency is willing to examine any information the Governors' Ethanol Coalition wants to provide regarding expanded uses of ethanol," Johanns said.
