More than 200 student engineers from 14 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada are gearing up to participate in the 2000 Ethanol Vehicle Challenge. The competition provides students with the opportunity to tackle real-world engineering issues and incorporate cutting-edge technologies, skills they may not gain in a traditional classroom setting.
Each team must re-engineer a Chevy Silverado 4x4 pickup truck to run on E85 - a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent unleaded gasoline. Vehicles will be tested for range, emissions, acceleration, performance, driveability and safety, while adhering to conventional levels of performance and comfort.
The competition begins May 13 in Ottawa and includes stops throughout Ontario, Canada, including Toronto, and Chatham. The competition concludes in Windsor on May 20.
