Nebraska Governor |
In a keynote address to the National Conference on
Ethanol Policy and Marketing, Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns identified the potential
market for ethanol in California, the use of ethanol in northeastern states, increased
consumer use of 10 percent ethanol blends and E85 and the commercialization of OxyDiesel
as excellent opportunities for growth in the domestic fuel ethanol industry.
"Achieving success in one or more of these near-term opportunities could easily
create a market for more than three billion gallons of ethanol, doubling today's current
production levels," said Johanns. Governor Johanns also identified several longer-term opportunities where ethanol could become an important player. At the top of this list is to initiate discussions with Royal Dutch Shell, BP Amoco and ARCO, three major international oil companies that have called for diversification by major oil companies into cleaner-burning, renewable fuels. "If major oil companies see a growing role for renewables in the world's energy future, we must involve them as partners in the continued expansion of ethanol production and use," said Johanns. |
Governor Johanns said the ethanol industry's greatest challenge is "to reduce ethanol production costs through genetic engineering, feedstock diversity and technology improvements. The Governor said, "although the march of progress can be painstakingly slow," ethanol will be the fuel choice in the next millennium.
