Legislation requiring the labeling of MTBE at the gas pump in the state of California was approved overwhelming by the California Senate, and is now awaiting action by the California Assembly. The bill, introduced by California State Senator Don Perata, would complement California Governor Gray Davis' Executive Order, which requires the labeling of MTBE to achieve the Order's broad goal of eliminating the use of MTBE in the state. At the same time, the California Air Resources Board has scheduled a meeting in June to approve a similar MTBE pump label, potentially obviating the need for legislation.
