National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Broin Collaborate to Improve Dry Mill Production Efficiencies

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has announced a one-year, $446,000 contract with Broin and Associates to improve the production efficiencies of dry mill ethanol plants. The cooperative research and development agreement includes:

  • develop improvements in process throughput and water management
  • evaluate proprietary yeast strains developed by the Laboratory for improving ethanol yields
  • complete an overall process engineering model that identifies new ways to increase efficiencies and improve economics.

"The advanced research capabilities and process engineering discipline that the Laboratory can bring to bear should be of tremendous value in identifying additional improvements to the ethanol production process," said Jeff Broin of Broin and Associates. "Our primary research focus is on developing technology to expand potential feedstocks for future ethanol production to the huge variety and volume of cellulosic plant materials," said Robert Wooley at the Laboratory. Wooley said he expects the grain ethanol industry " to be the backbone of future cellulosic ethanol production."
