New Congress Expected to Pick Up MTBE Battle
Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman
Senator Bob Smith of New Hampshire has pledged to continue his efforts to
address MTBE water contamination in the 107th Congress. Last fall,
by a vote of 11-7, the Committee approved the Federal Reformulated
Fuels Act of 2000 (S.2962), which would have banned the use of
MTBE in four years while creating a national Clean Alternative Fuel
Program to increase demand for alternative and renewable fuels such as
ethanol. The issue is expected to be a top priority for the
Committee, as numerous states continue to grapple with MTBE water
contamination.
