Washington Governor Locke Joins Governors'
Ethanol Coalition
"The addition
of Washington Governor Gary Locke to the Governors Ethanol Coalition
brings the total membership up to 25 governors working together to promote
ethanol. "Increased use of ethanol is a win for everyone," Locke
said. "It will reduce pollution, make us less dependent upon
imported oil and create economic opportunities for our farm and timber
industries." Locke said the use of ethanol will help the Spokane and
Puget Sound areas meet clean air standards and reduce smoke created by the
burning agricultural field wastes. Today, ethanol is produced in the
state by Georgia-Pacific Corp. in Bellingham and by the Miller Brewing Co.
in Tumwater, and is blended in more than 30 million gallons of
gasoline. Locke noted that several companies are looking into the
feasibility of constructing ethanol production facilities in the eastern
part of the state.
