BP Amoco Promises Early End to MTBE Use in California

In a recent meeting with California Governor Gray Davis, BP Amoco Chief Executive Sir John Browne committed to eliminate the use of MTBE in gasoline manufactured for California by the end of 2001, a year ahead of the deadline Governor Davis imposed earlier this year. BP Amoco intends to enter the California gasoline market after the pending merger with ARCO.

"Our intent on the early phase-out of MTBE responds not only to California's specific requirements but reflects BP Amoco's much wider commitment to achieving a progressively cleaner environment wherever it does business," Browne said. "Sir John Browne has a very good reputation for running a cutting-edge company with a strong environmental bias," Davis said. "I think his promise to make a good-faith effort to phase out MTBE one year earlier is a promise that is incredible and should be emulated by others."
