Responding to concerns about MTBE water contamination in the state, New York Governor George Pataki recently announced the adoption of the nation's toughest MTBE water standard, lowering from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion the amount of MTBE allowed in surface and groundwater. "New York has made tremendous progress in preserving and cleaning up our land, air and water. These ongoing efforts must begin with standards that will protect our state's water resources and drinking water supplies for future generations," Pataki said. "Tough standards for MTBE will mean cleaner, safer water for all New Yorkers."
