Concerned that the implementation of the next phase of the federal reformulated gasoline program could mean a reduced role for ethanol and resulting influx of MTBE to the Chicago area, Illinois legislators have introduced legislation to require MTBE pump labeling. House Bill 2908 has been introduced by Representative Bill Mitchell and would require MTBE labels on all pumps that dispense fuel containing any amount of the additive. Similarly, House Bill 2909, introduced by Representative Julie Curry, would require pumps dispensing fuel blended with at least one percent by volume of MTBE, methanol or ethanol to be labeled as such.
California Labels
Labels will be in effect in California by December 16, notifying consumers of pumps dispensing gasoline containing 0.6 volume percent or more of MTBE. The label must state, "Contains MTBE. The State of California has determined that the use of this chemical presents a significant risk to the environment."
Missouri, Too
Following six field hearings this fall in Missouri, the Interim Committee on Agriculture has recommended pump labeling of MTBE. The Missouri General Assembly is expected to take up the issue when it reconvenes in January.
