Recent testing completed by Southwest Research Institute of San Antonio, Texas on blends of ethanol and diesel fuel demonstrate significant emissions benefits from the fuel blend. Tests conducted using a 1991 12.7 liter Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine found that oxygenated diesel fuel significantly reduced emissions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide compared with conventional diesel fuel. A 15 percent ethanol blend produced 27 percent less carbon monoxide, 5 percent less nitrogen oxide, and 41 percent less particulate matter, while the 10 percent ethanol blend reduced carbon monoxide by 20 percent, nitrogen oxide by 4 percent and particulate matter by 27 percent.
